2018 Sauvignon Blanc
March 7, 2018

The grapes were sourced from two vineyards, both organically farmed. The dry-farmed Lolonis Vineyard, planted in 1943 and recognized as the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vineyard in California, provides minerality and the austerity we strive for in our rendition of Sauvignon Blanc. McFadden Farms Willow Block, at the northern-most reaches of Potter Valley, also old vine material, is equally austere with a briny component that adds complexity and nuance.
The growing season of 2018 began evenly, with no major hiccups until a minor rain event on October 1. Rather than a hindrance, this slowed ripening at Lolonis and help bring the acidity perfectly in line with flavors. We harvested on October 6, 2018. We brought in the more moderate McFadden on September 28.neutral Burgundian barrels. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation. Acid levels were brilliantly elevated, and the concentrated berries produced excellent fruit intensity and weight.
The juice remained on the lees, with bi-weekly batonnage, for 2 months.
Juicy and snappy, our 2018 SB opens with oyster shell, wet stone and lime notes. The palate is invigorating and fresh like spring, with clean acidity that weaves in and out and leaves you wanting more. Risotto with asparagus would be a lovely pairing. Of course, anything on the half shell would be a knockout.
Food Pairing Notes
A risotto with early peas and smoked salmon would be a lovely spring pairing, and when fresh basil is available, virtually any dish with a vibrant pesto would be a winner alongside this Sauvignon Blanc.
