Vineyards
The Corby Vineyards lie in the heart of the Anderson Valley at Philo. Our block sits on a southwest facing, gently sloped benchland. It is planted to the Pommard clone. The vineyard offers all that makes this valley so special and ideally suited to Pinot Noir; well-drained soil, cool climate, very cold evenings and plenty of fog.
Harvest
Crop levels were down in the valley in 2007, with our block yielding just under 3 tons per acre. Late August and September, the crucial months for Pinot, were perfect, with average highs of 80 and very cool evenings. Sugar/acid ratios could not have been better. We picked at day break on September 24. The temperature at the time of picking was a chilly 45 degrees.
Winemaking and Cooperage
The grapes were harvested by hand, destemmed and gently fed into an open-top tank with about 50% whole berries. The must was a frosty 47 degrees. Native yeast fermentation began ten days later and was complete by October 14. Free-run juice was drained directly into Francois Freres, Allier barrels, 25% of which were new. Native malolactic fermentation was complete by the end of February. The wine was racked just three weeks prior to bottling. We bottled unfiltered on August 20, 2008.
